All-new hatch has hard-to-beat space at a compelling price. introductionthe 2014 nissan versa note is an all-new model that replaces the outgoing versa hatchback. It doesn't pretend to be something it's not. Its styling doesn't scream for attention, yet it's not boring, either. It does just what it's supposed to do: carry lots of stuff at a reasonable price while achieving good gas mileage. when measured against the outgoing versa hatchback, the versa note is about six inches shorter, although the length of the wheelbase stays the same. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on the base model, while an all-new continuously variable transmission (cvt) comes on higher trim levels. Significantly, this revised cvt uses a secondary set of gears on the low end to help reduce the sluggish, rubber-band feel from which most cvts suffer. As a result, the versa note has adequate oomph at lower speeds, and most people won't even notice they're not driving a regular automatic transmission. fuel economy is another major selling point for for the nissan versa note, and is improved by 17 percent over the outgoing hatch thanks in part to a weight reduction of nearly 300 pounds, plus added technology such as dual fuel injection. Additional aerodynamic enhancements also help to make the versa note more slippery. The result is an impressive epa-estimated 31/40 mpg city/highway with the cvt. The base manual doesn't fare as well, earning 27/36 mpg city/highway. rear cargo space is an impressive 21. 4 cubic feet, the most of any small hatch currently on the market. Rear seats fold down 60/40, and an optional folding cargo floor on upper trim levels adjusts to create a completely flat load surface. although its low starting price will attract many to the nissan note, there are also plenty of new features and options for anyone looking to soup up their hatch. It's less wedgy than some, but isn't boxy, either. Designers say its shape is based on a squash line, referring to the path a squash ball takes when a player hits it against the wall and it ricochets back. Overhangs have been reduced by six inches compared to the outgoing hatch to give the note a tauter look, which also helps with improve handling. like any car designed to maximize fuel economy, aerodynamics play a key role in the versa note's styling. The front end is still pointed, but with softer curves rather than sharp angles. A steeply raked windshield rises up to a tall roof that arcs slightly. A v-shaped groove on the roof helps to channel air more efficiently over the top of the car. Tail lights have small vents on the corners to also help channel air. from the side, the versa note has deep, arcing character lines that add personality and further help with aero. Large headlamps and tail lamps wrap around to the quarter panels. The rear keeps a bit of its boxy shape from before, but corners are softer and more rounded. The rear window opening is relatively small and sits high up, which is presumably safer in a rear-end collision, but affects rearward visibility. on every model except the base, the versa note uses an active grille shutter, which automatically closes at highway speeds to channel air around the car, or can open to more effectively cool the engine. interiorit's all about convenience with the 2014 nissan versa note. The interior design is simple, perfunctory and well laid-out. The cabin is filled with lots of hard plastic, but designers did a decent job with different finishes and textures to give variety without looking cheap. controls are easy to use and well placed. On the center stack, three large, conventional knobs operate the climate control system. Above, base s models have a basic digital display for radio stations. Sv models with the convenience package and sl trims get a larger, 4. 3-inch display that shows artist and song titles as well as station information. Top-of-the-line sl models with the tech package get a touch screen with navigation. While nothing is fancy, everything is readily visible and within easy reach. front seats have a very upright seating position, and are comfortable enough for short and medium-length trips. But we're not sure they'd offer enough support for very long hauls. Fabric upholstery is basic and attractive, and side arm rests are easily within reach. Headroom is more than ample up front, and at 40. 8 inches, bests other hatches of its size. Front legroom is plentiful too, although it comes up slightly short against most competitors. This is, presumably, because nissan designers placed the front seat track farther forward to make more room in the rear. storage space up front is minimal; the center console has a tiny pocket next to the emergency brake level that's only large enough for a mobile phone. The rear of the center console has an area with two cupholders on base models and a large deep pocket on upper trims, but it's hard to reach from the front seats, making it better suited for back seat passengers. Rear legroom in the versa note can't be beat, however, measuring an impressive 38. 3 inches, substantially more than the ford fiesta's 31. 2 inches and the honda fit's 34. 5 inches. There's also plenty of tow room under the front seats, so even a six-foot-tall passenger shouldn't feel cramped. unlike some cars that have a raised area in the middle of the backseat, the middle seat in the versa note is relatively flush, but the center console inhibits legroom and the seat width is relatively narrow. For this reason, we'd save the middle seat for children or smaller adults. On sv models with the convenience package and ls trims, a folding center armrest with cupholders comes standard. All-new, bigger, roomier. introductionthe redesigned 2009 subaru forester is the third generation of the popular crossover utility vehicle. The forester competes with the honda crv and toyota rav4 among others. Visibility is exceptional. overall, the 2009 forester is 3 inches longer, 2 inches wider, and about 100 pounds heavier than last year's model. Despite the increase in size and power, the base forester gets improved fuel mileage, achieving 20/26 mpg on the epa's new city/highway cycle, the same as the crv and rav4. The turbocharged forester xt gets 19/24 mpg and requires premium fuel. The turbocharged xt is more desirable because of its torque, although it's more expensive to operate because of its premium fuel requirement. lineupfor 2009, there are a number of changes to the styling that make the subaru forester way sleeker, but the identity has not been changed. the functional hood scoop on the xt has a smaller bulge than before, but its opening is no less wide, thanks to a redesign of the turbocharger intercooler opening, and the steeper slope of the hood. The headlights with amber turn signals are shaped like gold-tipped eagles' wings, and the uplifting grille that fills the space between them has lost its boxiness, with corners upturned. Under the grille is a lower lip fascia that looks like there's a pack of snuff stuffed in it. The corners are tucked in so tightly that the bumper has almost been lost. The foglights are mounted in gray plastic fascia that runs 360 degrees around the car, being rocker panels on the sides. Even if there are no foglights the mounting spots are there in the gray plastic. the lines on the sides of the car, especially the flares over the wheelwells that might be bigger for the sake of trendy styling but aren't, made the '08 forester look dumpy. A black c-pillar, camouflaged to hide in the tinted glass, helps with the shape thing on the 2009 model. The five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels aren't bad looking. from the rear, the xt has a twin chrome-tipped exhaust, pretty cool for a tidy crossover. And the spoiler over the rear window makes its statement. the forester and rav4 look alike when parked side by side. walkaroundthe new dashboard for 2009, taken from the impreza, has a nice gullwing sweep from the center stack off to the passenger side, in brushed-aluminum-looking plastic material, interrupted only by a single climate vent. Underneath is a big glovebox. The center stack has a bit more of that nice aluminum-look trim, which others have called cheap but it looks fine to us, and just forward of the shift lever is a good-sized cubby. Climate and audio controls on the center stack are simple to operate. the background light to the gauges is a funky blue, just for effect, some will like it some won't. There's a slit over the center stack with digital display for time and temperature. The really nice perforated leather is a whole new ball game, erasing the almost-frumpy feeling sent by the cloth. the front doors have a nice elbow rest and large pockets each with a recess for 24-ounce bottles. The aluminum pedals on the xt are cool. the air conditioning cools well, fast and quiet. following subaru's design goals, the new 2009 forester most needed rear-seat legroom and cargo space. The rear 60/40 seats fold flat to make a nice cargo area, widened by 5. 2 inches between the wheelhouses thanks to a new double-wishbone rear suspension. The relatively gigantic cargo area will definitely appeal to active outdoors enthusiasts with lost of stuff. The specs are 33. 5 cubic feet with the rear seat up, 68. 3 with the seats flat. driver visibility is excellent in all directions, thanks to careful pillar design. Subaru staged a demonstration for us, placing a cutout of a kid behind the forester and a toyota rav4. The forester driver could see the kid in his rearview mirror at seven feet, but in the rav4 the kid was lost in a low blind spot for 23 feet. the rear seat reclines in all but the 2. 5x base model, and includes a retractable center tray with fixed drink holders. Legroom is excellent, increased by 4. 3 inches, on a wheelbase increase of 3. 6 inches; and there's a couple inches more shoulder room, as well. Benefitting from a strong unit-body structure, it makes big, clunky, truck-based suvs practically obsolete, at least when it comes to moving people and cargo. It handles more like a family sedan than like a big suv. The steering is direct and responsive, if light, and the brakes are easy to modulate. The ride is comfortable and much more stable than that of large suvs, which can often bound and lean. The traverse is large, though, so it can be bulky in parking lot and parallel parking maneuvers. power is more than adequate. The traverse comes with a 3. 6-liter v6 that moves it ably from a stop and provides decent passing punch. It makes 281 horsepower, or 288 with the available dual exhaust system. The traverse comes standard with a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy numbers are better than those of most truck-type suvs, but they're less than for the average family car. Given the traverse's spacious interior and eight-passenger capacity, the fuel economy is quite good. The second- and third-row seats fold flat to open up a generous cargo area. Even with all the seats up, there is enough room behind the third row for a week's worth of groceries, and an available power liftgate makes it easy to access those groceries. the controls are easy to reach and operate. Cloth or leather, the front seats are comfortable and supportive. Room in the first and second rows is plentiful, and the third row is bigger than most and is even useful for adults. It's much more pleasant to drive than those vehicles, thanks to dramatically improved ride and handling. Plus, it gets better mileage and is more space efficient on the inside. In short, the chevy traverse is an excellent family vehicle. for 2010, the only change is that a usb port is included with upgrade sound systems. Rear park assist and a rearview camera are optional. walkaroundchevrolet says the traverse is bigger than midsize truck-based suvs such as the chevy trailblazer and is only slightly shorter than a chevy tahoe full-size suv. The traverse shares its architecture with the buick enclave and gmc acadia. Though large, the traverse has a soft, sleek, modern appearance. up front, the traverse features an attractive version of chevrolet's split grille. The headlights start next to the grille and wrap around the front fenders. Horizontal fog lights mirror the headlights about six inches lower. A black air dam below the grille gives the front end a dark lower face. A peak at the center of the hood continues down through the grille and fascia, adding a touch of character. from the side, the traverse appears to have short overhangs for an suv. The window line rises to the rear and that angle increases at the rear windows. A character line is located about a third of the way up each door, and the black front fascia is picked up along the sides by black plastic over the rocker panels. Large wheels and tires keep everything in proportion. Up top, the traverse has black roof rails and an available two-panel sunroof with a fixed rear panel and an opening front panel. at the rear, the traverse features dark tailgate glass that dips down toward the center. The tailgate lifts up and does not have a separate opening glass. The center peak from the front is repeated here, as is the black lower fascia treatment. The total design is well thought out, smooth and stylish. interiorinside, the chevy traverse makes great use of its best-in-class space. Cloth or leather, the front seats are comfortable and supportive, with lots of head and leg room. the second-row bench seat fits three adults easily and there is plenty of head and leg room. With the second-row captain's chairs, there is a handy walkthrough to the third row. Three children can ride comfortably in the third row, and there is also enough head and leg room for two adults to fit back there. Adults won't be comfortable during long trips, though, because of the low height of the seat cushions. in terms of cargo space, the traverse has more room behind the third-row seat (24. 4 cubic feet) than any midsize suv, and gm provides a handy, though shallow, under-floor bin. With the second and third rows folded down, cargo volume is an impressive 116. 4 cubic feet, near the top of the class and almost eight cubic feet more than in the full-size tahoe. Those two rear rows fold easily, each with the flick of a lever, creating a nearly flat load floor. A strap on each section of the split third-row bench makes it easy to pull the seatbacks upright from the tailgate area. An available power rear liftgate also eases access to the cargo area. getting in and out is easy because the traverse sits lower than traditional truck-based suvs. Still, the driver is perched higher than in a car and therefore has a clear view of the road ahead. Visibility to the front is generally good, but the traverse is bigger than it feels, so it can be tough to see over the driver's right shoulder and objects immediately behind might be hidden from view. With this in mind, it makes sense to get the rearview camera. Not only does it add an element of safety, helping avoid the tragic mistake of backing over a child, it also proves to be highly useful in everyday parking situations, making maneuvering in tight quarters easier and quicker. up front, the driver is surrounded by an attractively designed dashboard that has nice graining but uses more hard plastics than customers might expect for a vehicle in this price range. The instrument cluster has two deep-set pods with electroluminescent gauges on a black background. It's easy to read and never washes out in bright sunlight. the center stack features a navigation screen or the radio, plus the climate controls. At the rear the lamp elements appear cut off at the style line rather than extending up to the top trunk seam. This contributes a sense of heaviness and more closely mirrors the rounded rear end styling of the acura rl rather than the taut crispness of the tl. the current accord sedan is larger than any before, and although it competes in the mid-size market segment it is by epa interpretation a large car. It is about five inches longer than primary competitor camry, and more than three inches longer that the nissan altima and maxima. the coupe, on the other hand, won't be confused with a large car. Virtually every exterior dimension save width is 2-4 inches smaller than that of the sedan. The coupe is sleeker yet still fits the accord mold. Stepping up to an accord ex-l with leather adds features, but the basics like seat design and driver ergonomics are shared by all models. the tilt-and-telescoping steering column provides a good range of adjustment to complement the adjustable driver’s seat, so all the masses can find a good driving position. There's a clear view of what’s all around outside, and of the instrument panel with its proven dial-and-needle gauges. The information display or navigation screen is inset under a shade at the same height as the gauges, so glare is controlled, and the screen can be viewed with polarized glasses. accord ex-l models come with leather on the seats, steering wheel, manual shifter and door panels. The ex-l leather appears of high quality and assembly as does the rest of the car. The width of the accord translates directly into a wide cabin, especially in front. The center armrest was designed to be big enough for two adults to share without awkward glances. rear-seat passengers will have few complaints as few do in large cars. Seat cushions and backrest carry right out to the door without wheelwell intrusion, offer space for a six-footer to sit comfortably behind another one, and easy entry and egress. The center seat is better padded than many, and as such it loses a bit of headroom to the outer seats. There are no rear reading lamps. three interior colors are offered on the sedans, black, gray, and ivory, while the coupe goes black or ivory only. Honda's graphics for the variable intermittent wipers are among the simplest: rather than bars, lines or dots of differing size, the accord uses one raindrop for long interval and three raindrops for more frequent wiping. The shifter is right at hand, and the proper handbrake has short travel. controls for sound, climate, and navigation are central below the navigation screen and vents. One row of switches controls audio input (am, xm, cd, etc.) and another row has six audio presets. The power driver's seat had 6-way adjustability, and a nice leather-wrapped steering wheel presented the usual audio and cruise controls, plus controls for the navigation system. A one-touch open/close moonroof with a manual sunscreen was included as part of the sv convenience package. one point particularly worth mentioning about the altima is its quietness. Considerable effort was made to rigidify the body structure and soundproof its panels. This contributes strongly to the car's class above impression, quietness being one sure hallmark of luxury cars. But the materials that silence cars also add weight. Nissan was nonetheless able to reduce the 2013 altima's weight from that of the previous model by 79 pounds, no mean achievement. nissan's zero-gravity seats are designed to provide uniform support from pelvis to chest. The benefits of these seats are said to be felt on long motor trips.
