2005 subaru outback review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New design brings room, refinement and performance. introductionthe subaru outback has been redesigned for 2005. Exteriors are sharper, more stylish, less boxy. More important, the new models are larger outside, and roomier in many dimensions inside. The interior design is more contemporary, more attractive, more comfortable and more luxurious than before.  the cars are lighter and more stable than before. They handle well on winding roads, yet the ride is smooth and soft. The headlamps are higher tech, more upscale in appearance, and the lighting is better managed, with improved coverage. All come with a full complement of safety equipment, including curtain-style airbags and all-wheel drive. It's designed for people who like to drive. The engine surges with power at high rpm making the car fun to drive on winding mountain roads.  the top models are still powered by a 3. 0-liter flat six, but horsepower has been increased to 250. The six-cylinder delivers strong torque, giving it plenty of power on mountain roads without having to work at it. These are the most popular models due to their price point. Yet the center of gravity has been lowered on the 2005 models for improved handling and safety. Wagons are most popular by far and are the best choice for venturing into the outback with a load of outdoor gear, but there is a well-trimmed sedan available. The 2005 models cost more, and not just a little bit. But there's a good argument they're worth it. lineupsubaru builds its outback in two body styles, sedan and station wagon. The five-speed manual transmission is beefed up to handle the additional power, and a five-speed sportshift automatic is available 1200).  the top of the line 3. 0 r comprises three iterations: the sole sedan wearing the outback badge and two wagons, the r l. Bean edition and the vdc limited. The standard powertrain in these three is a 250-horsepower six-cylinder engine coupled to the same five-speed sportshift automatic that's an option in the xt. The driver enjoys an eight-way power seat, tilt steering wheel, auto-off headlights and cruise control. There's the usual complement of power windows, outside mirrors and door locks and remote keyless entry. Air conditioning comforts occupants, who sit on durable-looking fabric upholstery and listen to a six-speaker am/fm/cd stereo. The cargo area has its own light, carpet (including on the back of the rear seats, which are 60/40 split fold-down units), grocery bag hooks and a retractable cargo area cover. The rear bumper is protected by a full-width step pad, and the roof rack comes already fitted with cross bars. A leather-wrapped, momo-brand steering wheel has integrated sportshift control buttons if the optional five-speed automatic is ordered. The xt limited 30,695) brings perforated leather seat trim and restores the power moonroof.  the 3. 0 r sedan 30,995) gets a tire pressure monitoring system, a rear-seat center armrest with trunk pass-through and a single panel power moonroof but trades the turn indicator-equipped outside mirrors for the base units. A momo-brand, mahogany-and-leather-wrapped steering wheel has integrated audio controls. Wagon lovers opting for the 3. 0 r l. Bean edition 32,195) enjoy an auto-dimming inside mirror with electronic compass, l. Bean floor mats and leather-trimmed seats and a removable cargo tray. Turn indicator-equipped outside mirrors return on the 3. 0 r vdc limited 33,395), as does the dual-pane moonroof. A three-frequency, programmable remote opener system joins a stereo upgraded with an mp3 player and rear sub woofer.  standard safety equipment across the line comprises dual-stage frontal airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and full coverage side curtain airbags. Active front-seat head restraints are standard, too, as are anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution.  all-wheel drive remains standard across the line, but 2005 sees three systems, one more than in 2004, maintaining the trademark capability but at reduced cost and complexity. The automatic transmission now houses five speeds and comes with sportshift, a manual-type shift function allowing drivers to select individual gears but without using a clutch peda. walkaroundcontrary to conventional expectations, jacking up a car's suspension by two or three inches needn't leave it looking top heavy or tippy. Smartly crafted fender blisters, a deeper front bumper and properly proportioned tire and wheel combinations can make even a tall car look confidently planted, as the 2005 subaru outback illustrates well when contrasted with its fraternal twin, the 2005 subaru legacy.  two honeycomb-like bars split the outback's grille horizontally, clearly distinguishing it from the legacy's and highlighting its extended, octagonal shape. Large round fog lamps both emphasize and soften the aggressive lower fascia. A low-rise air intake on the xt's hood hints at the power lurking beneath. On the xt and the 3. 0 r, the clear-lens turn indicators on the lower edges of the outside mirrors minimize their mass. Wide cross-section tires visually stretch the car's stance.  from the side, the hood's aerodynamic slope gives the car a look of motion even sitting still. In the sedan, the silhouette rises gradually to the a-pillar, then loops up over the geometrically arched side windows and back down behind the upscale, bmw-like c-pillar where it merges with the shoulder-like beltline before wrapping around an equally aerodynamically tapered boot. The wagon's roof line drops steadily rearward from the front doors, combining with the increasing inward tilt of the rear side windows to ease the air's passage beyond the wagon's tail end. Clearly outlined, circular fender blisters make the gap between tire and wheel well look less than it is. Minimalist splashguards behind both wheel wells and cladding along the bottom of the doors pull the body down even more around the tires.  the back end of the sedan traces the rounded shape of the car, with visible shoulders connected by a smoothly arcing trunk lid, concave below the trailing top edge. Inset in the center is the license plate. Large, trapezoidal taillights wrap around the rear fenders. On the wagon, all the lines (roof, rear window outline, beltline, bumper and rocker panel) draw inward, toward the car's center, giving it a taut, neat finish. Large, geometric taillights cover the upper corners of the rear fenders. Small, almost demure backup lights are embedded in the liftgate on each side of the chrome eyelid over the recess for the rear license plate. The secondary, high-mounted stop light is centered in the roof-high spoiler behind a stylish, crystal clear lens. interiorfront seats in the outback 2. 5i base model are comfortable, but definitely short of plush, upholstered in a durable fabric that's reasonably grippy, more so than the leather in the 2. 5i limited. Rear seats are bolstered about the same as the fronts, with a minimal rise in the center in recognition of the driveline hump.  the leather in the limited isn't especially kid glove-like, but it is richly surfaced. The front seats in the xt and above have fuller bolsters and better overall support; the lumbar adjustments at their least aggressive setting accommodate sensitive, surgically altered lower backs, while at the opposite extreme can brace a classic ramrod spine. Bottom cushions are deeper than many but lack the ultimate in thigh support achieved by the standard-setting bmw seats. The perforated leather insets in the xt limited adds some grip that the smooth-finished leather lacks and allows the barest amount of air flow that's refreshing on hot and cold days.  the dash is topped with mildly textured, high quality, seamless vinyl, low-gloss to minimize reflected glare in the windshield. The instruments are rimmed in black in the 2. 5i and xt, in chrome in the 3. 0 r. Gauges are large and round, positioned directly in front of the dr. 2007 suzuki sx4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. John rettie. introductionthe suzuki sx4 is an all-new subcompact car that comes standard with all-wheel drive. Suzuki says sx4 stands for (s)port (x)-over for (4) seasons. We found these were all good reasons to like this car.  the sx4 is indeed reasonably sporty, when equipped with a manual transmission. We'd classify it as cute. Finally, it's good for all seasons as it comes standard with an effective all-wheel-drive system.  a number of all-new models brings excitement to the subcompact segment. The suzuki sx4 competes directly with the new honda fit, nissan versa, toyota yaris, kia rio, hyundai accent, and chevrolet aveo. Yet the sx4 comes with all-wheel drive and it looks, drives and feels different from these other cars. lineupthe sx4 comes in two trim levels, the sx4 14,999) and the sx4 sport 16,399). From the side its profile has an uncanny resemblance to the latest mercedes-benz ml-class suv. That's not bad considering the ml has a much sleeker look to it than other more blunt-nosed suvs.  it seems strange to talk about the sx4 in the same breath as an suv, but it is exactly how suzuki describes it in the u. To be fair it describes it as a crossover, which is accurate in that it has a tailgate, fold down rear seats for added cargo space and all-wheel-drive. In europe, where the car was designed and has been well received, it's described as a hatchback. Nothing wrong with that in europe where hatchbacks are considered smart and practical.  one of the most unusual design cues is the unusually large quarter panel in the front door windows. Another is the wraparound glass at the rear behind the c-pillars, which are placed well forward of the tailgate. These design features give the car a distinct look.  the sx4 has a large windshield that slopes down to a hood that has a nicely curved front edge that wraps around the large one-piece headlight/turn signal units which are in turn nicely integrated into the sheetmetal. The curve of bodywork from the front of the distinctive front fenders extends down to the lower lip of the front bumper with its large air intake.  all in all, we found the design of the sx4 to be very pleasing. It does not look too small and despite its high roof line it has a sleek and modern stance. interiorthe suzuki sx4 is more a utility vehicle than an ordinary sedan, so we were particularly interested in the back end of the cabin. The specifications say there is only 10 cubic feet of luggage space with the back seats in place it seems much larger primarily because it is fully useable with little intrusion from the wheelwells. The wide track and low mounted rear suspension components allow for a flat floor.  tip the 60/40 split rear seats up all the way and there's a generous 38 cubic feet of cargo space, with a flat floor all the way to the hinges on the front underside edge of the seat bottoms. Getting stuff in and out is a breeze thanks to a full-width one-piece tailgate.  considering the overall size of the car, rear-seat leg room is pretty good, more than sufficient for a six-footer. Put in perspective it's the same as in the much larger mercedes-benz e-class but not quite as generous as in the similar size nissan versa. No gimmicks; everything is well placed and the brushed aluminum trim seems to be well finished. The car has decent cupholders and large map pockets in the front and rear doors.  three gauges fill the instrument pod, located in front of the steering wheel. The large speedometer is mounted in the central position slightly overlapping the smaller tachometer. driving impressionone of the best things about permanent all-wheel-drive is that the benefits are available at all times. Even on a dry road the car sticks well with no torque steer or spinning wheels. It goes without saying that the car grips much better on slippery surfaces.  as an aside all modern rally cars use all-wheel-drive and suzuki has announced it will enter the spectacularly fast world rally championship in 2008 with a high performance specially built version of the sx4. Although the company will not say officially, it does appear promising that there will be a production version of this car probably named the suzuki sx4 swt (suzuki works techno).  subaru's wrx and mitsubishi's evo, both wrc-based road cars, have been hot tickets with car enthusiasts for several years. Suzuki already enjoys a strong following with bike enthusiasts so it makes sense for the company to follow in subaru and mitsubishi's footsteps down the rally performance road.  this is a roundabout way of saying that the sx4 has the basic ingredients for a solid performance car. It has a wide track for great handling and it seems to have a solid body. The downside is it tips the scales with a slight weight penalty, which means it is not much faster than its competitors and its fuel consumption is not quite as good.  the all-wheel-drive system is called i-awd and operates in three modes via a console-mounted switch. The 2wd mode is for maximum fuel economy on dry pavement, the awd auto mode controls the drive power distribution ratio to the rear wheels from zero to 50 percent, depending on available traction while the awd lock mode is designed to facilitate traction in case of snow or mud. When in the lock mode, power is distributed to the rear wheels in the range of 30 percent to 50 percent. The lock mode is useful for really adverse conditions at slow speeds.  we found the car fun to drive with a manual transmission. The sx4 with achieves a slightly better epa-estimated fuel economy rating with an automatic than it does with the manual.  the power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering feels fine with virtually no sign of torque steer. It might not be quite crisp enough for a racer but it's far from being sloppy. We never had the chance to try the brakes in a panic but have no reason to doubt they work fine especially as abs and electronic brake-force distribution are included on all models.  overall handling is competent thanks, as much as anything, to the long wheelbase and wide track as well as the awd system. Those who like a soft cushy ride might find it a little too stiff for their liking. Those who want a sports car like ride will want to install stiffer springs and stronger shocks. The sport model does not include any suspension changes. Nonetheless the sx4 does appear to provide a good base for making a truly sporty small car a la wrx or evo. summarythe suzuki sx4 is an ideal small car for anyone looking for something other than just the cheapest most basic car. The sx4 might cost slightly more but it delivers more, including all-wheel drive. In many ways it is difficult to pigeonhole the sx4, though it's probably fair to say it fits between the honda fit and the subaru impreza. As an added bonus, there's suzuki's 100,000-mile, seven-year, fully transferable, zero-deductible powertrain limited warranty.  newcartestdrive. 2005 suzuki xl-7 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Based on the suzuki grand vitara, the suzuki xl-7 is a decent alternative to a minivan or for a small family with a couple of kids who are too big for safety seats but not big enough to complain about being cramped in the way-back seats. The xl-7 seats up to seven passengers, with a tiny third-row bench as standard equipment. It's built on a longer wheelbase and features a more powerful v6 engine than the grand vitara. It is built on the chassis of a truck frame. Transmission options are either a five-speed automatic or five-speed manual. The suzuki xl-7 is a carryover from 2004.

2000 buick lesabre review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. introductionit's amazing to think full-size cars were by far the most popular cars in the u. The lesabre is not a traditional large car because the body is not built on a frame, it does not use rear-wheel drive nor is it fitted with a v8 engine. The only cars left on the market that fit that description are the ford crown victoria, mercury grand marquis and lincoln town car.  the buick lesabre has been totally redesigned for 2000. It's somewhat hard to tell at first glance, however, because it looks similar to the 1999 model. Prices range from $22,890 to about $30,000 for a loaded model. Although the overall appearance of the new car is similar to the old car, it has all-new sheet metal with more curves. In particular, the side profile has a nice curvy upturn along the rear doors to a high trunk that gives the car classic lines that befit its position as a premium sedan.  at the front, the lesabre has a distinctive grille that sits well forward and is almost part of the front bumper. The headlights are well integrated into the lines of the car. Buick claims that the new body is much stiffer than the previous model giving the car a better ride and crisper handling.  safety is an important part of lesabre's image and buick has gone to great lengths to improve the safety of occupants in the newest model. Apart from dual airbags it also includes side airbags for the front seats. Stabilitrak helps keep the car on the correct line through a corner in slippery conditions by gently applying the brakes on one or more wheels. It cannot overcome the laws of physics but it does add a margin of safety by reducing the effects of driver errors. The head-up display projects speed and other information onto the windshield in front of the driver's eyes.  the seat belts on the front seats are mounted to the seat frame so they move with the seat for greater comfort. The seats boast a new design engineers like to call a 'catcher's mitt.' the seat back is much stiffer than usual; in an accident it holds the person in place and the headrest moves forward to lessen whiplash. It is especially effective in the common low-speed rear-end accident, according to buick. interiorvisually there might not be a great change to the new lesabre but inside it's another story. Buick has totally redesigned the dashboard to give the car a fresh, modern, luxurious look. The dash sweeps across the width of the car with a canopy over the instruments extending from the passenger side to the driver's door panel. This design gives the interior an open feeling and integrates the door trim into the dashboard nicely. A wide strip of faux wood trim extends along the door panels and across the center of the dashboard.  the driver information center on the limited model has a digital readout that can display oil temperature, fuel consumption, tire pressure and other data. Round analog gauges are easy to read. A bench seat does not provide much support for the driver compared to a bucket seat and the lesabre's is no exception. A large flat surface flips out that is designed to be a writing surface. It could prove useful for people who need to have a notepad handy while on the road. But it sits at an awkward angle and we found it difficult to use.  wide doors allow easy access to the front and rear seats. Rear seat passengers will find plenty of room. The slightly longer wheelbase and wider track on this new lesabre increase rear seating space. It gets a bit tight with three adults back there, however. That's good news because big buicks have not been known as cars that excel in the handling department. Their suspensions have been designed primarily to provide a soft, cushy ride. That can sometimes result in a wallowy ride where the car tends to float over undulations and provide little feedback to the driver. That floating sensation is gone. But the base lesabre should offer good handling.  the 3. 8-liter v6 engine is one of gm's best engines. It performs well in the lesabre, even though it has to propel a relatively heavy car. Buick prides itself as the maker of premium american cars and it has upheld that tradition with the 2000 lesabre.  for not much more than the price of a compact car, the lesabre delivers a six-passenger sedan with lots of features standard.
