2012 fiat 500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. How tiny cars should be done: with italian spirit. introductionthe 2012 fiat 500 is like the mini or volkswagen new beetle, a modern recreation of a classic. It features seven airbags, a new 1. 4-liter engine with something called multiair cylinder head technology, state-of-the-art blue&me hands-free technology and a bose sound system standard in two of the three models, and a great 5-speed gearbox or optional 6-speed manual automatic transmission that's also fun.  there are three models, although versions would be a better word than models, because they're so different, in a slight but meaningful way.  the sport really means it. The ride is firm, brakes are amazing, steering is quick and gearbox terrific, so use it all or live with it. The seats are terrific and the special sport interior is attractive.  the pop is that rare if not unique model, both the lowest cost and most all-around practical. For $2000 less than the sport, the fiat 500 pop is less aggressive with a better ride. All three models are named well. Which might not be possible for a while, as chrysler dealerships have to ramp up to sell the fiat 500. Production began in march 2011. lineupthe 2012 fiat 500 comes in pop, sport, and lounge versions. All fiat 500s use a 1. 4-liter engine.  fiat 500 pop 15,500) comes standard with the air conditioning, am/fm/cd/mp3 radio with auxiliary input, power windows, power door locks, power heated mirrors, cruise control, vehicle information display, fabric seats, 15-inch steel wheels. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard; a 6-speed automatic 1000) with manual shifting is optional.  fiat 500 sport 17,500) comes with firmer springs and shock tuning, tighter steering calibration, and a sharpened exhaust note. It comes with the 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. It's distinctively styled, with front and rear fascias with black mesh openings, slightly flared fenders, rocker panel cladding, roof spoiler over the liftgate, and 16-inch aluminum wheels. Smaller touches include red brake calipers, chrome exhaust tip and foglamps. Inside, the sport features seats in what fiat calls a gray/black interior environment, six-speaker subwoofer bose sound system, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, and blue&me handsfree communication technology with usb port and ipod control.  fiat 500 lounge 19,500) is the upscale model, with the 6-speed manual automatic, a fixed glass roof that makes it feel bigger inside, premium fabric seats, sirius satellite radio, 15-inch aluminum wheels with wagonwheel spokes, and more trim and chrome on the outside. It has the same softer suspension, steering, and body panels as the pop.  safety equipment includes seven air bags, reactive head restraints, electronic stability control, and abs with brake-force distribution, brake assist, and brake override. walkaroundif ever a picture of a car were worth a thousand words, the fiat 500 is it. Granted, it's easier to be tidy when there's less to deal with, and the fiat is so small there isn't much. But the sport, especially, is perfect. There's a chrome strip on the nose like a pencil-thin moustache, that the cinquecento's designer added just because without it, he said, the car's styling was too perfect. Rarely does any manufacturer understand what clean really means, but italians do. For that reason alone we need them back in north america, to be a good influence.  the face of the fiat 500, with round halogen projector headlamps and parking lights, combines the family resemblance of other fiat models sold in italy, with a modern interpretation of the original cinquecento, imported to the u. As a 600cc model back in the 1960s. It's a winning european design that's been brought to the u. On the sport, the best looking model, there's a horizontal cooling duct of black mesh that adds racy character, while the lower mesh grille integrates foglamps. The liftgate spoiler is a must.  the distinctiveness of the fiat 500's shape appears from the profile view, more than front or rear. The black window outline on the sport enhances the good looks of the all-business roofline, while the chrome on the lounge, especially those chrome mirrors and door handles, detracts from it. The healthy rear taillamps are located between the edges of the liftgate and follow the door's vertical cutline. For a contemporary look, the rear glass spans the width of the liftgate and meets cleanly at the pillar. The optional sunroof is available as fixed or powered.  there are five separate wheel designs of 15 or 16 inches, with at least three of them good-looking and eye-catching, and 14 vivid colors to choose from. Try nero (black), rosso (red), bianco (white), azzurro (blue), grigio (gray), argento (silver), giallo (yellow), verde chiaro (light green), rame (copper), verde oliva (olive green), rosso brillante (tri-coat pearl red), bianco perla (pearl white), and mocha latte and espresso, which apparently need no translation from italian. interiorif the exterior is the epitome of tidy, the interior is the epitome of neat. As roberto giolito, the head of fiat style says, it delivers absolutely everything that is required and nothing more. Unlike, say, the too-cute mini and too-boring yaris.  the fiat 500 instrument panel gives the fiat the visual feel of a sports car, except for its one flaw: the tachometer is combined with the speedometer, and this takes some fun out of driving and shifting through the gears, in particular with the sport, because it ought to have a tach of its own. The tachometer ring is inside the speedo ring, and almost all of the space inside the ring is taken up by lcd information. So all that's left is the tip of a tach needle moving around a chrome ring against small white numbers that are hard to read, especially past 6000 where the numbers are red. And the stub of the speedometer needle, with all its numbers to 140 mph, moves around outside that. Standard cloth, premium cloth, sport cloth. It may be referred to as cloth, but it doesn't look like cloth. They're all different fabrics, all satisfying, as much like leather as cloth can feel. There's also optional premium leather, but the other seats are so sharp that leather isn't missed. And the fit is just right, although other reviews have complained that there's not enough bolstering in the sport seats.  the top of the dash is vinyl and its design as simple as it gets: it's just there, and doesn't try to be anything, like for example the new focus that tries to be a cockpit surrounding the driver. 2007 nissan altima review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The nissan altima has been totally redesigned for 2007. It looks more like the maxima now. It's a couple of inches shorter on the outside, but has more room on the inside, including a spacious trunk. Fold-down rear seats allow the trunk to expand into the cabin for carrying big long things.  the object of the redesign was to bring the feel and power of a luxury car to this everyman's midsize sedan, and nissan has succeeded, at least with the altima model that has the v6 engine and all the options, including plush leather. It makes 270 horsepower, more than what's available in other midsize cars (excluding turbocharged or expensive sports sedans), along with 258 pound-feet of torque. The price for that power: the v6 requires premium fuel and gets 22/28 mpg.  another thing that makes the altima stand out is its new optional cvt, or continuously variable transmission. It's the only automatic transmission available in this car, and it's a winner with its manual mode, which allows six speeds or ranges. A cvt improves gas mileage because there's less internal friction.  the handling is true, and the suspension is quite firm without ever being harsh. It inspires confidence. It's a match for rough pavement and is steady and predictable in extreme situations. The altima also comes loaded with safety features.  an intelligent key comes standard in the altima. This might be convenient for some, but it leads to new problems, having to do with the memory of the human brain and confusion of the car's electronic brain. lineupthe 2007 nissan altima is initially available as five models: the 2. 5, 2. 5s, 2. 5sl, 3. 5se and 3. 5sl. Air conditioning does not come standard.  the 2. 5s adds air conditioning, a six-speaker sound system, remote keyless entry, power sideview mirrors, and speed-sensitive intermittent wipers, among other smaller things.  the 2. 5sl uses the continuously variable transmission, and adds leather interior with heated front seats and power driver's seat, moonroof, alloy wheels, dual-zone temp controls and rear air conditioning vents, among other smaller things.  the 3. 5 se uses the powerful v6 engine with the six-speed manual gearbox and cloth interior. It adds abs, traction control, and 17-inch alloy wheels, plus heated sideview mirrors and other features.  the 3. 5sl has most of the things listed above, but goes back down to 16-inch alloy wheels. It adds high-intensity xenon headlights, foglamps, bluetooth hands-free phone system, and nine-speaker bose cd/mp3 sound system.  a technology package includes the navigation system, a rearview monitor and satellite radio. On the higher priced models, anti-lock brakes are standard and electronic stability control is optional. Abs includes electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. Electronic stability control, which nissan calls vdc (vehicle dynamic control) is optional on 3. 5 models. walkaroundthe new 2007 nissan altima looks quite stylish, especially for a mid-size car. The body has gotten a makeover, and features a number of pleasing changes. Like some other new cars, in particular lexus, the fender flares are edgy and extend farther than before, allowing the body itself to be narrower and offer less frontal area. The gap between the tires and flares has been tightened. Overall aerodynamics are improved from 0. 33 to 0. 31, thanks to many things as always, not least the more steeply sloped windshield.  the wheelbase has been shortened by nearly an inch, and the overall length cut by 2. 5 inches, with shorter overhangs. The cowl was moved forward and rear glass rearward, which allowed for no overall decrease in cabin space. The beltline is low so there's more side glass, which adds to the roomy feeling.  the headlamps and taillamps appear almost exotic, certainly elaborate. As for the taillamps, nissan says they cost nearly as much as the headlamps (so don't back into anything!), and they definitely do look expensive. They're covered with clear plastic like the headlamps, and contain a silver ray-gun looking cylinder with the red lamp, plus a round white beam for the backup light and a big orange piece for the parking lamp and turn signal. interiorin redesigning the altima, nissan engineers were assigned to create more cabin space, and given one inch less to work with, on account of the reduction in wheelbase. They met their goal by stretching the distance between a-pillar and c-pillar, thus shortening the cowl and deck. There are 1. 7 inches less legroom in front, but 3. 1 inches more in the rear, and that's a lot; however, 0. 8 inches of rear headroom has been lost. Trunk space has grown from 15. 6 cubic feet to 17. 9.  the seats are relatively large. They feel firm and longer and higher than in last year's models. We've been in many luxury cars that didn't feel this classy inside. More soft materials are used, for touches like padded armrests, and the overall level of refinement is higher than with the former altima. It's the common and practical tripod design, with speedo in center, tachometer on left and gas and temp on right. The lettering is sharp, white on black, with red needles.  the center stack is neatly designed, with three dual-zone hvac vents at top over the sound system and good knobs, leading down to usable storage slots and the transmission lever, in this case for the cvt. The space for the big glovebox was created by downsizing the air conditioning unit, but nissan says there's no compromise in ac effectiveness; in fact, nissan says the ac is best in class, thanks to improved airflow and a quieter fan.  the intelligent key is standard on all altima models, but we don't think it's so smart. It may be true that women don't like to bother with putting a key in an ignition, as the manufacturers say, and like to keep their keys in their purse at all times; but it's also true that since intelligent keys have been invented, there has been a rash of dead batteries. It's left on the accessories mode, and drains the juice. Not even with a passenger totally devoted to the challenge, while we were stuck in traffic.

2008 subaru impreza review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new impreza and outback sport bigger, more refined. introductionthe subaru impreza lineup is redesigned for 2008, getting bigger and more refined in the process. Base impreza and outback sport models return, as do the high-performance wrx and even higher performance wrx sti. The engine produces 170-horspower, enough power for everyday needs and enough oomph for good passing punch. We drove it in the mountains of colorado and found it up to the task, but it had to work hard up steep grades partly due to the thinner air at high altitude. Drivers who want more power should consider the turbocharged impreza wrx, which is surprisingly civil in behavior.  the impreza powertrain is competitive with anything in the compact class, but some rivals offer six-speed automatics that improve fuel economy. The impreza's fuel economy is on par with other all-wheel-drive compacts, but it suffers compared to front-drive rivals. Even a minor wreck costs more than a tank of gas.  the impreza also has a handling advantage versus several competitors. Advanced suspension geometry, a platform built to host the high-performance wrx models, and a low center of gravity thanks to the boxer engine all add up to crisp handling with little body lean in corners. The gauges are easy to read, and there is plenty of storage space for small items. The front seat has enough head room and leg room for tall drivers, and visibility is good to all corners. The outback sport is only a hatchback. A satellite and navigation package 3500) adds a navigation system and sirius satellite radio plus the premium package equipment but with a single-cd player. The popular equipment group 319) adds auto-dimming rearview mirror, compass, and security system shock sensor. Other upgrades include an audio sound package 768) with xm or sirius satellite radio and a subwoofer/amplifier; a short-throw shifter for the manual transmission 374); auxiliary audio input jack 97); roof rack 250); remote engine starting 432); xm or sirius satellite radio 453); and a rear spoiler for the sedan 380). Traction control, electronic stability control, brake assist, and incline start assist (with manual transmission) are standard on all but the 2. 5i, where they are optional. walkaroundthe 2008 subaru impreza has grown up compared to the last model. The width is the same, but the wheelbase is 3. 7 inches longer on an all-new platform. Overall length is also up by 4. 5 inches for the sedan, but is actually down 1. 7 inches for the hatchback. The hatchback's length is taken out behind the rear wheels. Where the last model had a more squared off wagon shape, this one has a raked hatchback shape.  the impreza gets a completely new look for 2008. The front end changes from subaru's somewhat controversial horse-collar shape to the new corporate design that is short and wide. The shape of the grille flows into a pair of cat's eye-style headlights, and its basic shape is repeated below the bumper in an air intake that is flanked by fog lights. The outline of the grille leads into character lines on the hood. The whole effect is more organic and flowing than most cars these days.  the sides of the car are largely uncluttered, except for bold bmw-like shoulder lines that run from the front wheelwells to the taillights. The fenders are slightly flared at the wheels, again lending an organic, flowing shape.  perhaps most important, the impreza now has fully framed door windows, which reduces interior noise and the possibility of leaks. Reviewers have complained about subaru's frameless windows for years.  the impreza sedan ends with a high trunk line, a fairly generic rear end design, and red taillights.  the impreza hatchback, on the other hand, has a raked rear window that leads to an integrated roof spoiler, giving it a sporty demeanor. The dash and center console have lots of plastic, but it doesn't feel cheap. The gauges are black with white markings, red needles and raised silver rings. The gauges are easy to read and the overall look is pleasing.  the center stack has a vehicle information center with the clock, outside temperature indicator, and trip computer information set in a hooded area at the top of the dash. The radio is right below that, followed by a pair of air vents, and finally three easy-to-use climate control knobs.  with the optional navigation system, the radio controls are integrated along the sides of the nav screen. This makes some of the controls small and a bit hard to find, but it shouldn't be a problem after a few weeks. We found the screen hard to read with polarized sunglasses on and hard to read during the day with the headlights on.  small items storage is quite good. The glove box is of a good size. The center console features two cupholders and a deep center console to store cds and life's little trinkets. There is also a small change tray in front of the cupholders, and the front of the console has an open tray to set cell phones and the like.  inside, the impreza has plenty of room for a compact car. On the whole, there is more room than the last model. Even tall drivers should find enough head and leg room. Visibility to all corners is also largely unobstructed.  the back seat is quite impressive. It has good leg room with all but the tallest occupants up front and toe space under the seats is good if those front seats need to be set farther back. Rear head room is excellent. The only minor complaint is the fact that the seat bottoms are fairly flat, meaning long trip comfort may suffer.  cargo room is good, especially in the hatchback. The rear seats are split 60/40 and they fold flat easily via pull-up knobs. In the hatchback, folding the seats down opens up 44. 4 cubic.

2002 toyota tacoma review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Toyota tacoma boasts a heritage of solid service as a work truck along with a hard-earned reputation as a winning off-road race truck.  toyota makes a tacoma to fit almost any work-related or recreational pursuit. The tacoma line starts with a simple two-wheel-drive work truck loaded with nothing but quality, durability and reliability. The price and content of the sr5 package varies with cab, engine, and driveline. V6 doublecabs and v6 xtracab 4x4's can be ordered with a similar limited package, which includes most sr5 content plus power windows, locks and mirrors. Choose between a 2. 7-liter inline-4 and a 3. 4-liter v6. The trd package adds bilstein shocks, locking rear differential, increased-rate front and rear springs, a larger stabilizer bar, p265/70r16 b. Goodrich tires, overfenders (color-keyed on limited models), and special graphics.  also available from trd is a fully warranted, dealer-installed supercharger for the 3. 4-liter v6. The trd blower boosts output by 40 percent, from 190 to 260 horsepower. walkaroundfor 2001, the entire tacoma line received an exterior makeover to give it a more aggressive appearance. But that's where the similarities ended.  the 4x4 has a tough, off-road look to it, with big, beefy tires and enough ground clearance to hop over medium-sized rocks and stumps. The s-runner is much lower to the ground, and is graced with tasteful bodywork add-ons that go well with its handsome five-spoke alloy wheels and low-profile tires. Changes included new door trim, orange instrument illumination and available white-faced gauges, a new fabric bench seat, full cut-pile carpeting, door pockets, two auxiliary power outlets located under the cigarette lighter, dual cup holders, a driver-side foot rest, tinted windshield glass, auto-off headlights and adjustable front seatbelt anchors. We found the large instruments easy to read, the controls well placed and functional. A new assist strap on the driver's-side windshield pillar was added for 2002.  drivers over six feet tall will find the regular cab a mite cramped for space. The xtracab has a little more legroom (41. 7 inches versus 42. 8), plus room to recline the seat.  xtracabs also get a 60/40 split front seat, comfortable for driver and passenger. The big bucket seats in the xtracab limited we test-drove felt too big for the cab, giving the space a cramped feeling. But they sure were comfortable. And that lumbar support in the driver's seat was a godsend on a long drive. The cloth trim seems to be of good quality. In the extended rear cab area there's a little table that folds up to serve as either a cup holder or as a support for a child-restraint seat.  double cabs are reasonably roomy in the back seats. There's lots of kneeroom and good headroom, but the upright seatback makes them most suitable for short trips. They drive quite a bit differently depending on the way they are set up, but all do a good job in the roles for which they are designed. The two-wheel-drive basic work trucks ride smoothly and handle reasonably well. Rugged off-road versions offer impressive handling and capability in the rough stuff. The toyota 2. 4-liter is economical to run, with an epa-estimated city/highway mileage of 22/25 mpg when matched with a five-speed manual transmission. It delivers 190 horsepower at 4800 rpm, with 220 foot-pounds of torque at 3600 rpm. Even at that it's still reasonably economical with an epa city/highway mileage rating of 18/22 on a 4x2 with a five-speed manual.  the five-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and makes the tacoma more fun to drive. It feels like it would go anywhere, and get there in a big hurry. The trd suspension is fantastic, whether going slow or hauling. Even deep, bounding ruts failed to upset the handling in medium-speed corners. That stiffness pays off at higher speeds, however. Like all pickups, it feels much smoother with a little weight in the bed. The trd suspension developed by toyota and its off-road racing teams does a good job of smoothing out rough ground.  on dry pavement, the tacoma 4x4 holds corners surprisingly well. This enables the tacoma to walk out of ankle-deep sand with absolutely no trouble. The locking rear differential is indispensable for driving in an area prone to mud and snow. Its 190-horsepower 3. 4-liter v6 produces a deep-sounding (but not obnoxious) exhaust note. The sport-tuned suspension setup includes tokico gas shock absorbers, increased-rate springs, and front and rear stabilizer bars. Ride height is reduced by one inch from the standard 4x2. Though a little jouncy when empty, the ride never felt harsh, and handling was superb. As long as the weather doesn't get too slippery, the s-runner is as entertaining as anything we've recently driven. It is so much fun that we kept searching for reasons to go for a spin.  we used an s-runner to move some furniture from maryland to virginia and, like all pickups, it rode better when loaded down. Overall, the tacoma is an impressive package.  there are bigger trucks and there are more powerful trucks than the tacoma. The double cab (introduced last year) adds rear seating or some.
