The corolla is slightly longer than the honda civic, while the nissan sentra is noticeably taller and bigger. Three bars in the grille, but only the center one is defined because they are body colored. Iconic toyota emblem in the middle of the grille. Smooth front fascia that surrounds optional foglights, and a tidy functional air intake with black mesh under the bumper. It all sweeps nicely back and upward.  the bumper underlines odd headlamps, with a sweeping outline but they're bulbous, and stick out at the corners. They're bulbous in a three-dimensional sense, but sleek in their shape.  the rear end is not so clean, starting with a thick piece of chrome that stretches between the taillamps. The wing is low and thick, with winglets at its edges; it definitely adds a sporty touch and it's not overkill. The taillamps are simple horizontal slats that wrap around from the trunk to the sides of the car, and poof out from the body like the headlamps. With less chrome, less wing, less white in the taillamps, the tail would look as clean as the nose.  exterior fit and finish are at a high level for such an inexpensive car. Body-colored door handles and mirrors, as well as the spoiler and side sills on the s, add a touch of class. The wheels look ordinary, though, even the 16-inch alloys on the corolla s. interiorthe corolla has a pleasing interior. Design is simple, while materials and patterns are traditional and understated. The rear floor is flat except for a small incline at the back of the console between the front seats. A high-capacity heater with ducts for the rear is optional.  the instruments are simple and handsome, basic white on black; we appreciate the lack of pretension or flash. The sport steering wheel in the corolla s is perforated leather, with steering wheel controls. The sport seats in the corolla s are comfortable black cloth, though not especially sporty.  the optional navigation system is easy to use and it works well.  outward visibility from the driver's seat is quite good, even over the shoulder. Trunk room of 12. 3 cubic feet is about average and isn't hindered by black boxes and big speakers hanging down under the back window. It's epa-rated at 28/35 mpg city/highway with the manual transmission and 26/34 mpg with the automatic. That matches the mileage we got. The engine uses direct fuel injection, and dual variable valve timing with intelligence (vvt-i) to optimize valve timing for the best blend of power, economy and emissions. It uses a timing chain rather than a belt, which usually saves on service costs.  horsepower is about average for the class. Acceleration performance is adequate but not overly peppy with the 4-speed automatic transmission. The new ford focus comes with a 6-speed automatic and we've found it to be smoother and better able to keep the engine in the heart of the power band than the 4-speed automatic in the toyota can.  the corolla can't come close to the chevy cruze for tracking true around fast bends, and doesn't match the mazda3 for crisp response. And when the wind gusted, the car wanted to dance, even with its low 0. 29 cd.  the corolla has electric power steering, which matches effort to speed. On a patchy freeway around oakland, california, the ride was choppy at times.  the cabin is very quiet, except for tire noise on harsh pavement. It is a solid structure that exhibits no squeaks or complaints, not even over a nasty railroad crossing. For 2011 it's more basic, with just three models. The corolla's ride, handling and automatic transmission are not without weaknesses. From the enthusiast driver's perspective, it's one of the best sedans ever.  the a4 line is complex, with 21 variants. The key is thinking according to priorities: body style, engine size, front- or all-wheel drive, transmission type. All are nicely balanced, enjoyable automobiles.  the a4 2. 0t, still priced well below $30,000, is fun to drive. It corners like a sports sedan, and high-quality construction is evident inside and out. The new convertibles are stylish, sexy and reasonably practical, and they don't have to cost an arm and a leg. The s4 models will appeal to enthusiast drivers who crave their lusty power and sporty handling, for a lot less cash than the rs4.  every a4 should appeal to techies. State-of-the-art engines feature direct fuel injection: the cleanest, most efficient means yet devised to blend gasoline and air in an engine's cylinders. Transmission choices include a six-speed automatic with tiptronic manual-shift feature and an efficient continuously variable automatic (cvt) that delivers truly seamless shifting. Sophisticated suspension technology is augmented with electronic stability control, which can help the driver avoid a crash. It's classy and assertive, just short of overtly aggressive, with a tidy, well-planted stance that oozes presence. That presence is strong enough to disguise the a4's dimensions.  this is a relatively small car: considerably smaller than competitors like the cadillac cts or infiniti g35, and very close in most measures to the compact honda civic.  the eye immediately settles on the a4's big, tall grille, of which opinions vary. The only consensus seems to be that it's different, and it immediately identifies the a4 as an audi.  the headlights give the front-end an assertive look, with lenses that angle upward as they wrap around the fenders. Laterally split intakes below the body-colored bumper and outboard of the grille do double duty, housing fog lamps and channeling air toward the front disc brakes. A modest hood swell, which designers call a power bulge, carries the grille's vertical outlines back to the roof pillars. On the ultra-high performance rs4, the hood and fenders are fabricated from aluminum to reduce weight.  the a4's profile shows a sharply creased shoulder line running the length of the car, from the trailing corner of the headlights to the leading edge of the tail lights. The side windows are nicely proportioned to the body mass, atop a relatively high beltline. A bump strip breaks up the expanse of the lower door panels. The fully automatic, electro-hydraulic roof will open or close at speeds up to 19 mph. That's handy if a rain squall sneaks up while profiling through town. The soft top is thickly insulated, with a glass rear window and defroster, so it shouldn't be too big a detriment in cold climates. interiorthe premium-grade look outside the audi a4 carries through inside, thanks to clean, elegant design, generally rich-looking materials and good finish work. Colors combinations tend to be muted, and a choice of wood trims or aluminum inserts complement the leather, cloth and plastics.  the standard a4 seats are well bolstered, with plenty of lumbar support. We found them comfortable. The sports seats in s and rs models have big side bolsters that are harder to slide over, but the payback is velcro-like grip on a driver's backside and torso. The standard cloth upholstery feels durable and provides a bit of grip itself. The seats, mirrors, steering column and other features adjust in every conceivable direction, helping drivers find a comfortable seating position.  interior space, however, is not one of the a4's strengths, even compared to some sedans with similar exterior dimensions. To be sure, there is more than adequate space for average-sized adults to adjust, move and stretch in front, without pangs of claustrophobia. On a regular basis, the smaller space in the back seat is best reserved for children and pre-teens.  all of the a4's controls are focused on the driver; with few exceptions, they're ergonomically configured and intuitively located. The steering wheel hub repeats the grille's trapezoidal outline. A minimalist set of secondary controls on the wheel spokes manages audio and other functions. Column-mounted stalks operate the usual array of features and are clearly marked, except for the rear wiper/washer switch on the avant, which is controlled by the right-hand lever. We like audi's lane-change signal feature, which delivers three turn-signal blinks. The hyundai santa fe is all-new for 2007 and early indications are that it could be a true alternative to the toyota highlander.  the santa fe is a so-called crossover suv, meaning it's built like a car, using unibody construction instead of the body-on-frame construction of a traditional truck. It's a practical vehicle for everyday use.  completely redesigned, the new 2007 hyundai santa fe is attractive. It blends into the suburbs nicely, shedding the quirky looks of last year's model. The new santa fe is smooth and quiet and handles well on winding, paved roads. Yet it retains hyundai's value quotient. lineupthe 2007 hyundai santa fe comes in three trim levels: gls, se, and limited. All-wheel-drive is offered as an option 2,000) on all models. Active safety features include antilock brakes, electronic stability control, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.  the gls 20,945) is powered by a 185-hp 2. 7-liter v6 engine. Some would say it looks like a smaller version of the volkswagen touareg, which is not a bad comparison.  the most noticeable attribute of the santa fe's front is the complete absence of a bumper. Instead the front valence curves around from beneath the body to encompass the large grille and wrap around headlights. The hood slopes up toward the raked windshield and the wedge shape continues along the lower edges of the side windows that sweep up dramatically toward the tailgate.  even the rear has distinctively curved lines with high mounted taillight clusters that are partially mounted on the main body and the tailgate. The easy to see and easy to grab tailgate handle is definitely a santa fe design cue.  although the new santa fe is slightly larger than the previous model, it looks smaller because its styling is more refined and it looks less like a truck. interiorpleasing is the best way to describe the interior of the hyundai santa fe as it features modern plastics with a soft touch feel. All models include blue accent lighting at night to illuminate the instruments, switches and the edges of the front cupholders. Even the base gls has nice luxury touches that include realistic looking, but fake wood-trim accents across the width of the dashboard, surrounding the shifter and along the door panels.  the gauges are mounted in a large instrument pod in front of the steering wheel. The radio and climate controls are well located in a center stack that is mounted high in the dashboard for easy reach and observation while driving.  according to hyundai's measurements, the headroom and legroom is greater in all rows than in competing models thanks to a uniquely designed unibody that is not based off an existing car platform, thus allowing the engineers to maximize interior space without compromise.  with the optional third row of seats folded down there is a generous 34. 2 cubic feet of storage space on an almost flat floor.
