2007 hyundai veracruz review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new suv comparable to highlander and pilot. introductionhyundai continues to amaze. And with the veracruz, hyundai isn't just filling a heretofore unnoticed empty spot on its dealers' showroom floors. It's also taking another step up market in price, quality and performance. the all-new hyundai veracruz is no tentative, exploratory step. Its powertrain goes head to head with the competition, primarily the honda pilot, the toyota highlander, and the subaru tribeca. Instead, the veracruz gets a modern v6 more powerful than competing engines and just as frugal at the gas pump. The transmission is a thoroughly modern, six-speed automatic, putting it one gear up honda, toyota and subaru. There's also a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, again giving away nothing to the competition. the veracruz also enjoys a styling advantage. This is hyundai's first venture into the crossover market, so it has no mistakes to be corrected, no design vocabulary that has to be slavishly followed, no legacies to be exorcised. It's all a clean-screen project, but with the additional benefit of being able to learn from what others have tried. And learn hyundai has. The veracruz presents a clean, uncluttered face, a balanced, sleekly executed profile and maybe a bit of a copycat rear aspect, but if it is, it's at least a copy of a winner. inside, there's everything anybody needs except a navigation system. besides well-designed and smartly packaged seating for seven, including easy access to the third-row seats, a host of upscale features are standard on the hyundai veracruz gls, the base model. Anything missing there is available on the se or limited or in an option package, including a rear-seat entertainment system with wireless headphones and remote. veracruz is put together with care, too. Gaps between body panels, while not lexus or bmw grade, are close and consistent. Interior trim materials feel as good as they look, and they look very good. Gauges and controls look and feel good, with interesting blue-tone night-time instrument lighting and just the right amount of clickiness and rotational resistance. suspension is independent all the way around (preferred for ride and handling), with comfortable, front-to-rear shock absorber and spring balance over a longish wheelbase that smoothes out most freeway pavement heaves. There are six airbags, including side-curtain coverage for all three rows of seats. Antilock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution are standard. So is a full-featured, electronic stability system. And the front seats have active head restraints that move up and forward to cushion the head in rear-impact crashes. deeper bottom cushions on the front seats would be nice. So would a height adjustment on the front passenger seat. We also prefer the slot for the shiftronic, manual-like shift function to be on the driver's side of the main shift gate, instead of on the outside, away from the driver. There was some wind noise on one consumer-ready test vehicle that wasn't on the other. But other than these nit picks, we're hard put to find anything about which to complain. lineupthe 2007 hyundai veracruz is a seven-passenger crossover that comes with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (awd). The sole engine is a 260-hp v6, the transmission a six-speed automatic with a semi-manual shifting feature called shiftronic. veracruz gls 26,305) and gls awd 28,005) come with a respectable quantity of standard features, starting with air conditioning with secondary rear-seat controls; cruise control; am/fm/xm/cd/mp3 audio system with six speakers and three-month xm trial subscription; tilt-and telescope steering wheel with cruise and redundant audio controls; the common collection of powered accessories; and p245/65r17 tires on aluminum alloy wheels. Front buckets with fold-flat, passenger-side seatback; 60/40-split, flip-and-fold second row; and 50/50-split, fold-into-floor third row comprise the seating arrangement. The sole, factory option on the gls is a premium package 1950) adding a power, tilt-and-slide sunroof; eight-way power driver's seat; heated front seats; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; and backup warning system. se 28,005) and se awd 28,705) adds the power driver's seat, auto-dimming inside and outside rearview mirrors, programmable garage/gate remote, automatic headlights, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, roof rack (cross rails available separately), cooled front center console storage bin, fog lights, and p245/60r18 tires on 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Options include the premium & leather package 3350) with leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, sunroof, backup warning system, and an infinity audio system with cd6/mp3 plus subwoofer and external amplifier. The entertainment package 1600) comes with a dvd-based, rear-seat, eight-inch lcd screen, two wireless headphones and remote and surround-sound audio system, an auxiliary 115-volt power outlet, and a fish-eye conversation mirror. the limited 32,305) and limited awd 34,005) add leather seating surfaces; the heated front seats; a dual-zone, automatic climate control with auto-recirculation; the infinity audio system and conversation mirror; the sunroof; a powered liftgate; and a windshield wiper de-icer. The ultimate package 2950) adds power-adjustable pedals; powered tilt-and-telescope steering wheel; two driver-memory settings for pedals, steering wheel and outside mirrors; the rear-seat entertainment system and 115-volt power outlet; rain-sensing windshield wipers; lighted door scuff plates; and proximity lock/unlock key fob. Another package adds high-grade, premium saddle leather seating surfaces with black carpeting and interior trim 3200). dealer-installed accessories include carpeted floor mats 125), composite cargo tray 100), mudguards 90), sunroof wind deflector 85) and wheel locks 50). safety features include the mandated front airbags plus side-impact airbags for front-seat passengers (torso protection), full-cabin side curtain airbags (for head protection), three-point seatbelts and height-adjustable head restraints at all seating positions; active front seat head restraints; and child safety seat anchors and latches in the second-row seats. A backup warning system that warns of unseen objects and assists when parking and maneuvering in tight places is optional and we strongly recommend it because it can help the driver avoid a tragic accident. Antilock brakes (which allow the driver to steer the car through panic stops) are standard and augmented by electronic brake-force distribution (which optimizes brake application front to rear) and brake assist (which quickens brake application in emergency stops). Standard, too, are an electronic stability control system (which helps the driver keep the vehicle from spinning out in turns or in emergency maneuvers) and traction control (which limits tire spin in slick conditions). walkaroundhyundai has taken a cautious approach in styling its first mid-size crossover. There are no fancy swoops or swirls on the hyundai veracruz, no scoops or bulges, just smooth, graceful forms. Maybe the way to stand out in this increasingly competitive niche is to go for understatement, to aim for not standing out. Whatever, the veracruz has done it. front view shows a rounded face as smooth as an egg shell, and somewhat reminiscent of same, with the mildest of upper lip on the bumper. Two air intakes, the top one ringed in chrome and sporting the hyundai flying h logo, share the mostly seamless fascia. A brace of almost imperceptible ridges pick up the sweep of the top intake and carry it back across the hood to the feet of the a-pillars framing the windshield. Organic-shaped headlamp assemblies wrap around the fenders. A contrasting underpanel circling the veracruz beneath perfectly aligned seams lessens the visual mass while adding perceived height. When fitted, asymmetrically shaped fog lights tuck into the upper edge of the underpanel directly beneath the headlamps. from the side, an organic overall shape is marked by a finely drawn crease that starts at the headlight, then drops ever so slightly behind the front wheel well before rising in a straight line to the taillight. Side windows trace the aero-shape of the roofline, which ends in a spoiler integrated into the top of the liftgate. Thin half-circles matching the contrasting underpanel arc over the wheel wells, which even the standard 17-inch wheels decently fill. Deep rear doors promise easy access to the third-row seats without over-playing the comparatively long wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear tires). some design aspects of mid-size crossovers are unavoidably repeated from brand to brand. There's only so much creativity possible given the need to package three seats and some basic cargo space. 2006 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. By careful, we mean ford spent serious effort dotting the i's and crossing the t's, looking after the details that make all the difference. At the same time, ford realigned the models and overhauled the pricing structure, giving customers more truck for less money, nearly $4,000 less in some cases. the new explorer is available with a v6 or v8. It's a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction, and competes against the chevrolet trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder. we were well pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes used on the 2006 model, all of which have improved by at least one order of magnitude. The new 2006 explorer is quieter than last year's model and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter than on last year's models and the interior has been improved throughout. lineupthe explorer lineup from bottom to top includes the xls 27,175), xlt 28,870), xlt sport 30,845), eddie bauer 30,845), and limited 33,160), with all prices reflecting the inclusion of the $645 destination and delivery charges. Ford is quick to point out that these suggested retail prices are from $675 to $3,900 lower than those for comparably equipped 2005 models, which don't benefit from all the improvements for 2006. The average price reduction is $1,750. standard equipment on the xls includes the 4. 0-liter v6 engine and five-speed automatic, roll stability control (rsc), independent rear suspension, keyless entry, cruise control, message center, compass and thermometer, power windows, locks and mirrors, air conditioning, a floor console, rear vent windows and added 12-volt power point, a cargo management system, am/fm stereo with single cd or mp3 player, driver manual lumbar adjuster, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. xlt adds a chrome grille, unique bumper and trim, power seat, fog lamps, puddle lamps, 16-inch tires and wheels, an overhead console and additional storage. the eddie bauer version adds yet another grille design, running boards, roof rails, 17-inch wheels and tires, more wood and leather, 10-way power seat, message center and trip computer, and remote keyless entry. The eddie bauer is now split into two models, one with the luxury package added in and one without. The five-seater gains a flat load floor behind the second row of folding seats. Sirius satellite radio will be offered late in the model year. Dvd-based navigation is also available for about $1,500. the standard safety package includes the automatic all-wheel-drive system and roll stability control, a system already in use at volvo and land rover, that intervenes with throttle and brakes when the vehicle senses an impending tipover situation. Seat side air bags, an new adaptive energy-absorbing steering column, a passenger classifier in the seat, and the tpms. Ford says this truck meets all known future safety standard for front and side crash through 2010. walkaroundthe new 2006 ford explorer looks like the f-150 pickup in front, with finer, scaled-down features. With the v8 engine, the new explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,300 pounds. And it's rated to carry up to 1,500 pounds of payload. interioreverything inside the explorer is new for 2006. Every switch, button, face, texture and panel of the interior has been changed, changed to a much more modern, crisper presentation, one of ford design boss j mays's personal design campaigns brought to life. There is a dark wood for most models and darker, richer wood for the eddie bauer version. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte, depending. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield of the early models we drove. second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench seat, a 60/40 split bench with recline and third-row access, or two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo. the third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than before so kids can see out better. The third row is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding. and now the floor really is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise (2 degrees as opposed to 10 before). The armrest is very large and filled with foam to assist in side crash protection, with the chrome latch pull rounded around the leading edge, but the door handle is buried underneath it, where the human wrist cannot comfortably go. Otherwise, the new explorer interior works very well. the new seats are at once more supportive and more comfortable than the old, hard explorer seats, the colors and trims and combinations are elegant and tasteful, the metallic trims just about right, not overdone. driving impressiontwo new engines are available for the 2006 ford explorer. The 4. 0-liter single-overhead-cam v6 has been retuned with variable valve timing and is rated at 210 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Both powertrains are quiet and smooth. The lighter v6 is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, but both are very pleasant, competent and quiet rides. ford told us before we drove the truck that customers had demanded quieter operation from the new explorer, so they have used the body-on-frame design to maximum advantage to quiet the truck down, isolate it from the road, and halt the transmission of noise and vibration. In this respect, ford has done an exemplary job on the new truck. The ac system operates with 30 percent less noise yet moves and exchanges more air. Conversations are easily heard, the music sounds good, and the mirrors, with their new square corners defying aero logic, are mercifully quiet, as are the tires. this is a big, heavy family truck with 15 years of continuous sales success and a few dark episodes behind it (involving previous-generation models), so they have utterly bathed it in safety equipment, from standard roll stability control (also used in volvo, land rover, and other ford truck products) to smart air bags to side air bags to an air curtain setup for the second and third rows. Ford says it expects a full house of five-star safety ratings, the highest possible, when the truck is tested. the new steering on the 2006 explorer has a much heftier feel at highway speeds with plenty of assist for parking. The new suspension is one of the most supple we've driven on any suv in this big class. And the new brakes work much harder with much less pedal pressure and travel than before. Body roll is much better (the explorer leans less in corners), and the general feeling of being planted on earth is stronger on this new chassis. The new chassis is some 63-percent stiffer than before, and a stiff chassis is a key element for crisp handling and a smooth ride. This truck manages to be isolated from the road, but well connected to it, at the same time. summaryford is a lot better at trucks than cars these days, and with the new explorer, they have shown just how good they. Most models add automatic door locks, and the altima coupe adds an 18-inch wheel option with larger tires. For 2009, the coupe has a glossy, painted grille. The altima sedan launched as a 2007 model. The altima coupe and the hybrid were introduced for the 2008 model year. the altima is a driver's car among work-a-day mid-size sedans and coupes. For drivers who appreciate sharp handling, the altima excels. It connects with its driver and inspires confidence. It's steady and predictable in fairly extreme situations. The 3. 5-liter v6 is rated at 270 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. the gas-electric altima hybrid sedan boasts an epa-rated 35 miles per gallon city, extending its range past 600 miles between fill-ups. Its electrically powered air conditioning works even when the engine is stopped. most altima models are equipped with a continuously variable transmission, or cvt, which works like an automatic. Nissan has excelled at cvt technology. Most altima models are available with a six-speed manual transmission. the altima sedan is comfortable, practical and well suited to growing families. The altima has earned the full five stars in national highway traffic and safety administration (nhtsa) front- and side-impact crash tests. walkaroundthe nissan altima sedan was redesigned for 2007, while the altima coupe was introduced in 2008. Styling changes for 2009 are therefore minimal. the altima sedan and coupe look edgy and stylish. The sedan is about five inches longer than the coupe, but both of these mid-size cars share familiar nissan/infiniti design cues. The altima coupe, in particular, has a hint of nissan's gt-r sports car. in profile, the sedan's rear deck is distinctively short. Its fender flares are pronounced, allowing the rest of the body to be narrower and slip through the wind with less frontal area. The gap between the tires and flares looks tight, just as we like it. the headlight and taillight clusters are elaborate, almost exotic. Nissan calls the headlamp arrangement a multi-parabola, which means its coverage is all over the place. As for the taillights, nissan says they cost nearly as much as the headlamps, so don't back into anything. They're covered with clear plastic like the headlamps, and contain a silver ray-gun looking cylinder with the red lamp, plus a round white beam for the backup light, and a big orange piece for the parking lamp and turn signal. from the front, the altima coupe looks pretty much like the sedan, despite nissan's pronouncement that the only common body panel is the aluminum hood. In side view, though, the coupe is pure sport coupe. There's good balance between the longish hood, greenhouse and short trunk lid, with just the right amount of sheet metal between the cleanly outlined wheel arches. This design probably increases stability at socially irresponsible speeds, but at rest it looks almost plump. The price-leader altima 2. 5 sedan adds power sideview mirrors, a standard trip computer and outside temperature gauge, a rear seat lock, speed-sensitive variable intermittent windshield wipers, and perhaps most significantly, standard air-conditioning with a cabin air filter. the overall level of fit, finish and refinement inside the altima has improved substantially compared to pre-2007 models, and interior quality is far more competitive in the class. The available leather upholstery feels rich, and it's a big step up from the standard cloth. When the key is close enough to the car, the driver starts it by pressing a red button to the right of the steering wheel. That leaves the system in the accessories.
